Different Strokes a supplement to Massage & Bodywork Magazine included the following statistical data in the February/March 2002 edition.  After mailing surveys to 897 randomly selected members, the following data was calculated from 493 surveys:

  • 61% of respondents practice Swedish & Deep Tissue Massage
  • 42% of respondents work as independent practitioners in an office environment
  • 60 % of respondents had been practicing for five years or less
  • The price for a one hour massage is $50-$36, depending on the setting
  • Therapists see an average of 14 clients per week for a one hour massage
  • On an average, therapists report 69.4% of their clients are females
  • Most clients receive a massage for stress management

Associated Bodywork & Massage Professionals (ABMP) estimated in 2001 there were 166,698 practicing massage therapists in the United States.  The trend seems to be nearly a 7% growth rate annually.  If you are interested in reading the entire survey check out

Continuing Education Regulations

Substantive changes were made to the first draft of the CEU Regulations in 2001 
after comments from AMTA and individual practitioners. 


MTAC reviewed the proposed regulations and submitted the final draft to the Board of Chiropractic Examiners.  The Board voted on the proposed

changes and submitted it for final review by Board Counsel, DHMH,AELR and DSD. 



Commencing with renewal year October 2002-2004, certificate and registration holders shall satisfactorily complete a minimum of 24 hours of continuing education within the previous 24

months as follows:

  • 3 hours in ethics and jurisprudence
  • 3 hours in communicable diseases including Aids/HIV
  • 18 hours in any massage related courses
  • Have a current CPR
      certificate


CEU Regulations will become effective when the final notice of action is   published in the MD Register.
